On April 18, China’s Ministry of Commerce voiced its opposition to the US increasing tariffs on its steel and aluminum products and stated it would take all necessary measures to protect its interests.

The day before, US President Joe Biden had called for a significant increase in tariffs on Chinese metal products.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that the ministry urges the US to stop increasing tariffs on Chinese products and immediately remove the additional tariffs, arguing that these measures are protectionist.

China also believes that US pressure on other countries to restrict Chinese products will undermine the security and stability of global supply and industrial chains.

The latest move by China’s Ministry of Commerce comes after the Biden administration announced it would raise tariffs and is also pressuring Mexico to ban the indirect sale of Chinese metal products to the US through the country.

The US is also investigating Chinese trade practices in the shipbuilding, maritime, and logistics sectors.

Most recently, the US tightened export regulations on semiconductors, making it difficult for China to access artificial intelligence chip products and chip manufacturing tools.
