20 thg 5, 2024

According to the Vietnam Food Association, by April 30, rice exports reached 3.17 million tons, valued at 2.037 billion USD, an increase of 9.51% in quantity and 33.56% in value compared to the same period in 2023.

Rice prices in the Mekong Delta region remained stable over the past week. The Summer-Autumn crop has begun in this area, but the yield is not yet high.

Meanwhile, the high demand for rice continues to push export prices up slightly.

In An Giang, according to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's update, prices of most types of rice remained unchanged: OM 18 at 7,800-8,000 VND/kg, Nang Hoa 9 at 7,600-7,700 VND/kg, Japanese rice at 7,800-8,000 VND/kg, IR 50404 at 7,500-7,600 VND/kg, OM 5451 at 7,600-7,700 VND/kg, and Dai Thom 8 at 7,800-8,000 VND/kg.

In the retail market in An Giang, regular rice is priced from 15,000-16,000 VND/kg; long-grain fragrant Thai rice from 19,000-20,000 VND/kg; Jasmine rice from 17,000-19,000 VND/kg; standard white rice at 17,000 VND/kg, and Nang Hoa rice at 19,500 VND/kg.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta have completed the harvest of the Winter-Spring 2023-2024 crop, with a planted area of 1.488 million hectares. The yield of this crop reached 71.84 quintals/ha, with an estimated production of about 10.65 million tons of rice.

By early May 2024, for the Summer-Autumn 2024 crop, the localities in the region have planted 878,000 hectares out of the planned 1.48 million hectares.

According to the Vietnam Food Association, by April 30, rice exports reached 3.17 million tons, valued at 2.037 billion USD, an increase of 9.51% in quantity and 33.56% in value compared to the same period in 2023.

Regarding exports, Vietnam's 5% broken rice was offered at 585-590 USD/ton on May 16, up from 585 USD/ton the previous week. A trader in Ho Chi Minh City said that demand remains high while domestic supply is low.

According to this trader, Indonesia's National Logistics Agency also wants to import more rice.

Traders believe that supply will improve from June when the main harvest season of the Summer-Autumn crop begins.

Additionally, Thailand's export rice prices rose to their highest level in more than three months last week due to low supply and strong demand.

The price of Thailand's 5% broken rice continued to rise, reaching 632-640 USD/ton, up from 600 USD/ton the previous week.

According to a trader in Bangkok, the price increase is due to reduced supply, while demand from Indonesia and Brazil is high.

Floods in southern Brazil have caused human and livestock casualties, destroyed infrastructure, and disrupted grain transportation to processing facilities and the port of Rio Grande.

Meanwhile, the price of rice from the world's leading rice exporter, India, remained stable due to weak demand. India's 5% broken parboiled rice was priced at 531-539 USD/ton last week, unchanged from the previous week.

According to an exporter in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, India's rice prices are more competitive than those of other countries, but demand has not increased.

Meanwhile, global coffee prices continued to rise.

The price of Robusta coffee on the London exchange continued to rise on May 18, with an increase of 89-98 USD/ton, ranging from 3,203-3,524 USD/ton. Specifically, the delivery term for July 2024 was 3,518 USD/ton, for September 2024 was 3,453 USD/ton; for November 2024 was 3,380 USD/ton, and for January 2025 was 3,294 USD/ton.

Similarly, the price of Arabica coffee on the New York exchange on the morning of May 18 tended to increase compared to the previous session, rising by 8.35-8.7 US cents/lb. Specifically, the delivery term for July 2024 was 206.6 US cents/lb; for September 2024 was 205.45 US cents/lb; for December 2024 was 204.5 US cents/lb, and for March 2025 was 203.75 US cents/lb (1 lb = 0.4535 kg).

Certified Arabica coffee stocks on the New York market were reported to have increased by 4,755 bags on May 16, reaching a stock level of 740,449 bags.

In Vietnam, the average coffee price on May 18 was 103,800 VND/kg, an increase of 1,500 VND compared to the previous day.

The highest coffee price in key areas of the Central Highlands (Dak Lak, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Dak Nong, Kon Tum) was recorded at 104,000 VND/kg.

The Central Highlands provinces, Vietnam's main coffee-growing region, received a total rainfall of 195.6 mm in the 10 days from May 1, 41% lower than the historical average.

Meanwhile, the meteorological agency Somar Meteorologia also reported that the Minas Gerais region of Brazil had no rain last week and the area has experienced three weeks without rain.

The U.S. National Weather Service forecasts that the El Nino weather phenomenon will gradually weaken in the coming months, while La Nina weather will develop from August and will be characterized by heavy rainfall for the remainder of the year.
