At the close of trading on January 15, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.65% to 43,221.55 points, the S&P 500 gained 1.83% to 5,949.91 points, and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.45% to 19,511.23 points. This marks the best performance for all three indices since November 6, 2024.

According to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday, the December 2024 Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed that core inflation—excluding food and energy prices—rose 3.2% year-over-year, lower than the previous month’s increase and below the 3.3% rise expected by economists surveyed by Dow Jones. Headline inflation for the same period increased 2.9% year-over-year, in line with expectations.

Bart Melek, a commodity strategist at TD Securities, stated that the lower-than-expected core CPI is a positive signal for gold. It could lead the Federal Reserve to consider rate cuts. At the close of trading on January 15, spot gold prices rose 0.6% to $2,693.63 per ounce, while gold futures climbed 1.3% to $2,717.8 per ounce.

In the oil market, Brent crude prices rose 2.59% to $81.99 per barrel, while WTI crude prices increased 3.19% to $79.97 per barrel. A report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) revealed that U.S. crude oil inventories fell to their lowest levels since 2022 due to increased exports and reduced imports, although gasoline and distillate stockpiles rose more than expected.
